Brief History: Heuer made world class chronographs in the 60s and 70s but in the late 70s the company was in financial decline when cheap quartz movements became common and demand was high for reliable and moderately priced dive watches. In France 1979, Heuer designs the reference 844, a classic style divers watch with a strong case and work horse movement. Heuer outsources the case and movement to G.Monnin company in France. For only a year Heuer sells this reference with its distinct red 24 hour marker dial, French spelling of Professionel and Metres and French provenance at the 6 oclock. Even rarer still are the Cathedral hour hand examples with G. monnin signed movements and casebacks (like this one). The watch proves an instant hit and Heuer comes out of crisis by the end of the year and moves production of the watch to Switzerland and no longer uses the prototype 24 hour red dial. For the following years Heuer produces the 844-2, 844-3, etc all with slight one-year-only detail improvements until 1985 when TAG buys the Heuer company and the final iteration of the reference is made; the TAG Heuer branded 844-5. Function: Watch runs great and functions exactly as it should. Bezel clicks crisp and rotates, correctly, in one direction. Crown screws down, winds, and sets smoothly. Watch has been pressure tested so indeed a vintage watch you can take anywhere this summer and dont have to take off in the water. This watch is an incredible value for its impressive performance, even compared to mordern dive watches, and this example has survived remarkably well by any serious collectors standards. Case: Original unpolished case has wear but is overall very nice for a vintage watch. Original factory finish and grain still present. 41mm without the crown, 20mm lugs.Dial and Hands: Original, UNTOUCHED, and basically mint. Tritium lume patina is even, consistent, and beautiful. Cathedral hour hand indicates an early example. Crystal: New Sapphire crystal is installed and will not scratch. Original crystal is included.Movement: FE4611a movement looks mint, running strong with no known issues, full service was not recommended it was running so well. A true tool watch movement built right from the beginning and will run for decades more.*Note: Movement pictures were taken during service and case was not opened after pressure testing.Bracelet: Original Heuer signed jubilee bracelet with flip lock and divers extension. Bracelet is in nice vintage condition: finish is worn but links are very strong and secure. 4 removable links(!) and micro adjustments in the clasp will accommodate about 6.25-8.5 wrist. Service:Watch was just serviced June 2019 at Tag1000Diver USA. Service work included:-Full disassemble and cleaning -All gaskets replaced-Sapphire crystal-Pressure tested to 50 Meters
